Thread starter Emmett_Brown Start date Aug 15, 2018 #1 Hi,I just completed a new mix for The Reverse Engineers; you can listen free here: drums were tracked in a small, slightly overly deadened room, so I ended up using the UAD Ocean Way Studios plug to create a room for the band so that it sounded more natural. I used the suggestion that Slamthecrank made recently on another thread; where he creates a stereo aux, and sends a little bit of each bus/group to it. Also, I used the big room, with the furthest mic placement, muted the other 2 mics, engaged the HP filter, and used remic mode. After previously unsuccessful attempts of using OW, this gave me the results I was after. Here are some plugins I used:- UAD Ocean Way studios - Softube Console 1 SSL on most tracks- UAD Fairchild on vocal bus- UAD Shadow Hills comp on drum bus- UAD API 2500 on mix bus- UAD Ampex on mix bus- A combo of Waves DBX 160 and Vertigo VSC-2 on the lead vocalAre you using Ocean Way? What ways do you use it? Last edited: Aug 15, 2018 #2 Nice!! Makes all the difference with the drums, in my opinion, especially with the toms which actually sound like toms in the OWS space. #3 It's one of those plugins that reveals itself in the right situation. I thought everyone was crazy for a long time--didn't get what the big deal was. That was until I produced/mixed a project early in the year where the main guitar was an acoustic captured through a very questionable DI. It literally saved the record. Not saying it will be heralded as the greatest guitar sound ever, but no fan would ever think to complain. #4 Great points. Drums and acoustic instruments are a natural fit for this plugin. I bet it makes strings sound amazing as well. I think in the past I struggled with it because I was using multiple mics simultaneously and tried to blend them and had phase issues; which I'm sure an experienced user can manage, but just using one mic was the ticket for me. Allen's decades of experience recording countless hit records and using these mics can't be overstated. I have more to add to that later. I asked about the process as I recently listened to a Tape Op podcast interviewing Allen and he dropped some interesting nuggets on the Ocean Way plugin development. Gotta get me a Sphere now #6 Hey Chris,Is this going to exist as a native plugin as well or just in the UAD realm? Do Sphere users get any kind of coupon or is this totally separate? Thanks!Shaun #7 Hey Chris,Is this going to exist as a native plugin as well or just in the UAD realm? I know this might seem selfish, but I would like to see this become an incentive to add to the UAD customer base. More customers = more profit = more money for

I realize the sample library is not the same as recording there but it has the depth and the splash of that roomIs it a good plugin reverb in general? it's ok, not bad. Relab 480l is much better. I'm sure there are lots of verbs that are better as well. It's sort of the never ending story with plugs, you give people a slick interface and it's always gets overhyped. You compare it to Ocean Way Drums and that alone is enough to come to the conclusion that it doesn't sound at all like the real room. Seriously? Wow! Next, you compare it to... wait for it.. an emulation of a digital reverb processor from decades ago. What? Why compare it to a Lexicon 480 inspired reverb plugin? The UAD Ocean Way plugin is not trying to emulate classic reverb boxes, or any reverb boxes for that matter. It's (trying to) emulate the real room sounds of Ocean Way. It's doing this in a "hybrid" approach, as it isn't purely algorithmic, but it's also not just using impulse responses, it's a combination of both techniques. Does it sound like the real rooms? I don't know, all I know is that comparing it to Ocean Way Drums is not going to be a valid way of testing it, that much do I know. What I also know, is that the Ocean Way plugin can sound amazing. I know, because I spend a lot of time with it, first to get to know it, lately because it's a must have plugin for all my mixes. Sampled instruments, lead vocals, guitar, it all benefits from Ocean Way. You finish your amazing post by saying that it's only being hyped because it has a slick interface, stating that you are sure that a lot of reverbs are better than the Ocean Way plugin. I think it's insulting to all the people who think that the UAD Ocean Way plugin is a great/good/fantastic plugin, because you are basically saying we think it's great because of the slick interface. Well thank you, I guess the 20+ hours of testing it before my purchase was a waste of time, all I had to do was simply look at the interface and wait for it to convince me it's awesome. I have a lot of reverb plugins, but not

Totally separate? Good question. The Ocean Way Microphone Collection is exclusive to UAD-2, so there won't be a native version. We don't have a coupon. #11 So , non UA users , who have also invested in your mike system are sol ? #12 Hi UAD people. I’ve posted about this before in the wishes forum, but it seems apropriate to leave this question in this thread. Is there a possibility for UAD to allow placing the Townsend Labs Sphere plugin before before the Unison pres in Console, so that the real workflow of Mic->Preamp could be emulated? The present solution of placing the UAD pres in the DAW after the Sphere feels like a compromise. I know the Sphere system can work with the Unison pres in the reverse order in the DAW as stated in the Sphere manual, but still it would be nice to fully emulate the real world workflow. Can this be done and if so are there any plans to realize this? Please Chris and Gannon, can you shine some light on this? Thanks,Miguel Barrosa This is definitely something I have brought up with UA. They seem open to it but really I have no idea if and when this will happen. I will continue to bring it up until they do it. #13 Hey all, in the event that you're curious what one of these new models might sound like in a mix, I just finished a simple "rock" track that includes my vocals run through
