Period marksthe efflorescence of Sinhala poetry with secular “Sandesha” poemsgaining much popularity. Among the popular Sandesha poems of this period are“Thisara Sandeshaya” (Swan’s message, dated 14th century), “GiraSandeshaya” (Parrot’s message), “Hansa Sandeshaya” (Goose’smessage), “Parevi Sandeshaya” (Dove’s message), “KokilaSandeshaya” (Cuckoo’s message) and “Selalihini Sandeshaya”(Starling’s message) belong to the 15th century. Jataka tales formed the thematic content ofmost Sinhala poetry of the medieval period. “Kavya-Sekharaya” writtenin mid 15th century by Sri Rahula Mahathera narrates the“Sattubhasta Jataka” and Guttilaya of Vetteve Thera (15th century) isbased on the “Guttila Jataka”. THREATS TO SINHALA LANGUAGE It is recorded that manySinhala literary works of the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa period which extendsto about 1500 years (until about the 13th century CE), were lost bythe South Indian Tamil-speaking Dravidian invaders during their severalinvasions during this period. They were instrumental in the destruction of royalpalaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries, libraries and places of learning locatedin the ancient royal capitals. Vastlibraries with thousands of ‘ola’ palm-leaf manuscripts were set on fire anddestroyed. Similar destruction occurred again, with the arrival of thePortuguese in the early 16thcentury. The Portugueseperiod (1505-1658) constitutes a long and poignant chronicle of oppression andinjustice meted out to Sinhala Buddhists. These Catholic Portuguese were the first colonial power to pave in this country the wayto almost continuous religious tensions – the repercussions of which is felt tothis day in Sri Lanka. The Portuguese period was a reign of terror withwidespread killings and destruction and the undermining of Buddhist culture andliterary activities. Among those killed were Buddhist scholars including Bhikkhus. AllBuddhist temples and places of learning in the maritime areas under Portuguesecontrol were completely demolished. Monasteries were razed and theirpriceless treasure looted and huge libraries were set on fire. In 1588,the renowned Buddhist educational institutions such as the Wijayaba Pirivena at Totagamuwa and Padmawathi Pirivena of Keragala (which had carried on the traditions of ancientTaxila and Nalanda universities) were destroyed and their incumbents killed. Thefamous Weedagama Privena in Raigam Korala andSunethradevi Pirivena of Pepiliyana Kotte were burnt down. The valuable booksof the temple were destroyed. The great Poet monk Weedagama Maithree Thero whowrote Lowedasangarawa and Thotagamuwe Sri Rahula were living in that temple atthe time of its demolition by the Portuguese. The Dutch, who ousted the Portuguese in1640, occupied the places under Portuguese control. They. Do you know Learning in Sinhala? How to use Learning in Sinhala and how to say Learning in Sinhala? Thispeculiar change of attitude among our people in recent years. Themost striking influence of all these developments and trends was the strongouter orientation of people, especially the youth. The heightened importanceaccorded to spoken English at the expense of Sinhala was clearly evident duringthis time, so much so, those who spoke English were considered by many as themore educated ones that should be emulated. Also, there is the tendency among somepeople to give undue importance to those who could speak the Englishlanguage. They are considered to be smarter, refined and better calibre as opposed to those who could not speak English. Itis common observation and experience generally in the urban settings thatpeople who communicate in English draw more attention and respect and find iteasy to get things done as compared to those communicating in Sinhala. Such disregard and disrespect for the Sinhalalanguage has the tendency to push other aspects of Sinhala culture to thebackground. Owing to the lack of a strong exposure to their own culturalvalues, learning English has made these misinformed and misguided people to movefurther away from their culture and values. It is not the language per se but itscultural dimension that has become a serious problem in our country. There is atendency among some of the English educated folk, to observe western mannerismsand attitudes and consider themselves to be more refined, more cultured and astep above the others. Often in superficial ways, they tend to observe peculiarmannerisms and deportment that are different to or contrary to our longestablished cultural norms. This unwarranted and ridiculous attitudinal changesthat learning English or being able to speak the language has brought about notonly tends to alienate this group of individuals but also has led to divisivenessamong our youth. This trend has made some of our youth to shy away from theirown language and culture. Speaking English or mixing English with Sinhala, oradding English words while speaking in Sinhala became the fashionable andaccepted practices. This we commonly observe in some television programs to thedismay of many. There is no question that there are manypositive aspects and much to be learnt from other cultures. However, unfortunately it is those superficial, worthless and undesirable aspects ofother cultures that have been of appeal to some people. Often the immature,naïve, careless and slapdash individuals get trapped in these westernsuperficialities. The youth of this period – 1980’s and 1990’s grew up at atime when there were extreme forms of political. Do you know Learning in Sinhala? Continued similartrade activities and started converting people to their form of ProtestantChristianity. They too were instrumental in undermining Buddhism, and destroyedmany Buddhist temples, monasteries and the royal palace at Hanguranketa.BRITISH PLUNDER AND CRUELTYThe British replaced the Dutch as thecolonial power, and captured the entire country in 1815. The British were responsible for the most catastrophic andshattering damage to the Sinhala Buddhist cultural heritage including theSinhala language. They not onlyintroduced their language as the medium of communication in all affairs ofgovernance and economic activities, but took direct measures to undermine theSinhala language and culture. English was forced upon our people as thelanguage of administration, the language in which justice was meted out, thelanguage in which government records were kept. The Sinhala language andordinary Sinhala people, suffered immensely during the British period ofoccupation. Temperance movementENGLISH LANGUAGE AND WESTERNCULTURAL NORMSDuring the British colonial era from 1796to 1948, and a good part of the post-independence period, the promotion of theEnglish language and Western cultural norms was the order of the day as far as thepolitical establishment of the country was concerned. The urban Englisheducation system had much to do with this undesirable development. Schooleducational services were basically the monopoly of the Catholic and Christianmissions and English was the medium of instruction. European cultural normswere promoted in these schools. The rural masses and bhikkhus studied Sinhalaand other oriental languages whereas in the urban areas English was the mediumof instruction and communication. Higher learning at this time was basicallybifurcated between rural and urban where English education was confined tourban communitiesOpportunities for advancement werelimited to those with an English education. They were better paid and enjoyed greater benefitsfrom government. At this time, theinfluence and authority of the village temple was reduced to a level ofparasite owing to willful neglect and undermining of these traditionalinstitutions. The study of history was dropped from school curriculum therebypreventing children from being exposed to their history and cultural heritage. In spite of being undermined anddiscriminated against, it is simply a miracle that Sinhala language was able tosurvive this tragic situation for over four and a half centuries. What could becited as primary reasons for this is theinherent strength of the Sinhala language, and also the dedication of theSinhala scholars of that time, especially the Buddhist scholar Bhikkhus such asthe Velivitiye Saranankara Mahathera, Hikkaduve Sri Sumangala Mahathera (thefounder of the Vidyodaya Pirivena), Waskaduwe Sri Subhuti Mahathera, Kahave SriRatanasara Mahathera, Baddegama Sri Piyaratana Mahathera,.
