2023 had two movies inspired by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and between the two, Renfield was the less faithful yet more enjoyable movie to watch. The Last Voyage of the Demeter was the other 2023 Dracula movie, an expansion of one chapter from the source novel, "The Captain’s Log," into a two-hour creature-feature film. Because it adheres so closely to the book, it does not add anything new to the genre. Conversely, Renfield is a unique blend of comedy and horror that brings a fresh take to the Dracula cinematic universe. The Renfield cast is led by Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as Robert Montague Renfield, Dracula’s servant. The movie is a loose sequel to Universal’s classic monster movie, Dracula, expanding on the relationship established in the original. The movie explores the dynamic between Dracula and Renfield after 90 years together, until Renfield's action-packed ending. But while the characters are familiar, the irreverent tone is completely unexpected. As a result, Renfield is a great addition to any Halloween movie checklist – much more so than The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Renfield Is The Perfect Blend Of Horror And Comedy Renfield’s Comedy Allows The Horror To Be More Gratuitous Renfield shakes up the staid nature of a straightforward adaptation by leaning into the absurdity of some of the Dracula tropes. This is a wonderful blend of the story's Gothic roots and the movie's modern setting. Related "Conflicted Character": Nicholas Hoult Details Renfield's Evolution From Dracula's Shadow Nicholas Hoult describes Renfield as a "conflicted character" while detailing the evolution that brought him out from under Dracula's shadow. Contemporizing the setting also helps Renfield stay fresh. As it’s been nearly a century since Renfield lived among the living, there’s a lot of great fish-out-of-water comedy, including a makeover montage. Hoult and Cage are both actors who can handle dramas and comedies, and Renfield requires them to draw from both toolboxes. Cage is in his element, playing Dracula completely straight, which of course makes the exaggerated, Bela Lugosi-inspired performance even funnier. Hoult gets to showcase his action and fight experience from the X-Men movies. Because Renfield has its comedic parts, it can push the violence as well, as the humor undercuts the gruesome action sequences. The leap simultaneously establishes the reverence for the horror classics as well as an anemic shorthand in the storytelling.After the impressive introductory sequence that sees Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage composited into the 1931 film to explain their history together, we meet Renfield (Hoult) in the present as a long-suffering henchman to his narcissistic boss, Dracula (Cage). Despite an early attempt by vampire hunters to free Renfield from Dracula’s grip, Renfield remains a miserable yet loyal servant in a constant struggle to source Dracula’s next meal. Renfield tries to absolve his guilt by using meetings at a support group to poach the toxic narcissists in fellow members’ lives to feed his boss while realizing something needs to change. Enter traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), whose severe grudge against the Lobos, a New Orleans crime syndicate, puts everyone on a violent collision course. Still, his beleaguered straight man struggles to hold the spotlight against Awkwafina’s firecracker wit or Nicolas Cage’s scene-chewing portrayal of Dracula. As charming as Hoult’s Renfield can be, and the actor can handle whatever physical horror or comedy gag gets tossed his way, the mild-mannered Renfield shrinks to the background when more assertive, bolder characters are on screen. Renfield often becomes overlooked in his own story against Rebecca’s volatile bid to avenge her father or Dracula’s narcissistic quest for domination.Chris McKay’s reverence for horror, the classic Universal Monsters, and these characters extends well beyond the ingenious 1931 callbacks. It’s everywhere, right down to the Basil Gogos inspired color palette. Dracula fanatics will connect Rebecca’s father to another classic literary character or spot the nods to other Universal Monsters. Cage’s Dracula is an amalgam of various character iterations, right down to the London After Midnight-inspired sharp teeth.
