(Image credit: George Marston)Peacemaker loves peace so much, he's about to make war on HBO Max in his own streaming series spin-off of The Suicide Squad. With a brutal combat style and a strangely silly demeanor, John Cena's Peacemaker stands out among modern superhero adaptations for the bizarre dichotomy of his personality, and his four-color-fueled, comic book-inspired look.Peacemaker is about to premiere of HBO Max on January 13, with trailers having shown off an irreverent, bloody action ride all focused on Cena's eponymous anti-hero.You may likePeacemaker season 2: Everything we know so far about James Gunn's returning DC seriesDC's new Peacemaker comic takes place in the universe of the show – and James Gunn was its story consultantSo how does Cena's version of Peacemaker match up with the comic book version, who has his own extra weird and oddly violent past? We'll break it all down right now.Who is Peacemaker?Peacemaker (Image credit: DC)At first glance, Peacemaker may seem a bit like DC's Punisher (though he does predate Frank Castle by a decade) - a violent, gun-toting vigilante with an almost inscrutable code of personal honor. But Peacemaker's past has some particularly dark twists that make him somehow even more bizarre and brutal than his most obvious comparison.First appearing in 1966's Fightin' 5 #40, not from DC but from Charlton Comics (we'll explain in a moment), the original Peacemaker was Christopher Smith, a pacifist whose dedication to his idea of 'peace' led him to take up arms and violently suppress those he deemed warmongers alongside his peacekeeping organization the Pax Institute. However, those origins were changed slightly when DC purchased the rights to the superheroes of Charlton Comics, including Peacemaker, Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, The Question, Nightshade, Thunderbolt, and Judomaster. Designated as residents of Earth-4 in DC's Multiverse, the Charlton heroes were folded into DC continuity following the collapse of the Multiverse in 1985's Crisis on Infinite Earths.Get the best comic news, insights, opinions, analysis and more!Though he retained his look and some aspects of his character, the rebooted version of Smith, introduced in his own Peacemaker limited series, is a violent vigilante

WWE superstar John Cena’s decision to channel his love for entertaining his fans into movies has been fruitful for both him and us. His roles in ‘The Suicide Squad,’ ‘Hidden Strike,’ ‘The Wall,’ ‘The Independent,’ and the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise have certainly added to his stardom and popularity. If his mere presence in a movie wasn’t enough, his performance as the titular jingoistic superhero in James Gunn’s ‘Peacemaker’ (a spin-off of ‘The Suicide Squad’), a character found in DC comics, loved by both viewers and critics alike, further catapulted him into mainstream Hollywood action genre. The following list is proof that Cena has a lot in store for us, and if you are his fan, you can be relieved that you will see him a lot more in the future. Here are the upcoming movies and shows he will be a part of.1. Peacemaker Season 2 (August 2025)The success of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 has made WarnerMedia and HBO Max greenlight Season 2 of this superhero series headlined by the DC Comics anti-hero/Captain America caricature Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, played to perfection by John Cena. The main cast is expected to make a return in the 7-episode series, although there is still time for that as DC head/show creator James Gunn has stated that the series will arrive after ‘Superman: Legacy’ (July 11, 2025) but precede the events of the series ‘Waller’ that will explore Viola Davis’s character Amanda Waller, the one responsible for the Suicide Squad and its actions. ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 will be a part of Gunn’s DC Universe Chapter One. The returning cast includes Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Harcourt, Steve Agee as Economos, and Danielle Brooks as Adebayo. Season 2 (eight episodes) is set to arrive in August 2025, but a specific release date is awaited.2. Heads Of State (TBA)Even though the plot of this Amazon Studios action thriller is under wraps, it is described as Air Force One meets Midnight Run. The movie has potentially pitch-perfect casting per se, with stars like John Cena, Idris Elba, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas involved. Ilya Naishuller of ‘Nobody’ fame is the director of the movie, which is based on a script by Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec, with an initial draft by Harrison Query. Both Elba and Jonas have proved their niche for action with ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’ and ‘Citadel’ respectively. That said, Cena is no stranger to action either. Moreover, Elba and Cena have worked together in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ so the audience is well aware of their on-screen chemistry. Overall, we can expect a power-packed, high-octane action thriller. Things will get even more interesting if one of the leads is on the other side of the law. The rest of the cast includes Jack Quaid, Carla Gugino, Paddy Considine, Richard Coyle, Sarah Niles, Huw Novelli, and Katrina Durden. Elba and Cena are executive producers as well. The movie is in its post-production phase, and further updates. Sign in to your CBR account WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episodes 4 and 5 of Peacemaker, "The Choad Less Traveled" and "Monkey Dory," now streaming on HBO Max. A promo for the sixth episode of Peacemaker, "Murn After Reading," reveals a big twist in the HBO Max series' Butterfly arc. The promo begins with the ending from Episode 5, "Monkey Dory," which saw Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks) being attacked by Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) after learning he is one of the Butterflies. Later, Peacemaker's father Auggie Smith is seen being released from prison with the intention of killing his son, John Cena's Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, followed by a shot of his White Dragon armor. The promo then moves to Peacemaker's trailer, the Butterfly that he has been secretly keeping in a jar draws a peace symbol on the side of the glass, much to the bafflement of Chris and Vigilante. The promo ends with the police converging on Peacemaker's home, followed by Det. Sophie Song witnessing UFOs landing in front of her, which is accompanied by someone proclaiming, "You have got no idea what you're fucking with here." Peacemaker had previously teased that there was more going on with the Butterflies than it seemed. In Episode 4, "The Choad Less Traveled," where viewers also first learn that Murn is a Butterfly, Judomaster cryptically told Peacemaker, "The Butterflies are not what [he thinks]." While their ultimate goals are currently unknown, the promo seems to hint that the Butterflies are not evil. Series creator James Gunn has previously stated that Episode 6, "Murn After Reading," holds "a special place in [his] heart," but the episode he's most excited for audiences to see is Episode 8, which was kept secret from the press. "Eight is the best, yes," he said. "Eight is great. And I love six, I have a special place in my heart for six, but eight is the one that I really am excited for people to see. As you probably know, we've kept it. We haven't shown anybody. Nobody knows what's gonna happen in eight. But I know what's going to happen. The cast knows what's going to happen. Some of HBO Max knows what's gonna happen. We're all very excited to show people the last episode of Peacemaker. The last episode of this season." Warning: this article contains full spoilers for the Peacemaker Season 1 finale! The eighth and final Season 1 episode of HBO Max’s Peacemaker, titled “It's Cow Or Never,” has come and gone, wrapping up Peacemaker (John Cena) and company’s mission to stop the Butterflies. We’re going to break down exactly how things ended, answer some lingering questions, tell whether there's a post-credits scene, and share what we know about Peacemaker Season 2.Be sure to check out IGN's review of the Peacemaker Season 1 finale! How Peacemaker Season 1 EndsPeacemaker and his teammates Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland), and John Economos (Steve Agee) finally track down the location of the barn where the alien Butterflies are hiding the source of their syrupy food supply–a kaiju-sized alien slug nicknamed the “cow.” Their mission is to destroy the cow which will in effect cause the Butterflies to die from starvation and end their secret invasion of the planet. After kicking off a battle with the Butterflies by activating Peacemaker’s sonic boom helmet, the team takes heavy losses, with Vigilante and Harcourt suffering severe gunshot wounds, and Economos going down with a much more superficial injury, leaving Peacemaker and Adebayo to venture into the cavern below the barn to deal with the cow.The Butterfly leader known as Goff (Annie Chang) pleads with Peacemaker to spare the cow because, in a surprise twist, the Butterflies don’t want to conquer the world like your typical evil aliens, they want to help save the people of Earth from themselves so our planet doesn’t perish like the Butterflies’ planet did. Peacemaker has a strong emotional reaction to Goff’s request to spare the cow and help the Butterflies, and we see his traumatic memories of the experiences that shaped him into the murderous yet conflicted man he is today. It seems as though he may take Goff up on this offer to bring peace to the world. However, Peacemaker ultimately rejects Goff’s offer, shooting its host body in the chest (sparing Goff’s life) and activates Adebayo’s human torpedo helmet to deliver an incredibly disgusting killing blow to the cow.As for why Peacemaker made that fateful decision, Peacemaker show creator James Gunn explained the reasoning to Variety, saying, “[The series is] about a character who is trapped in his own ideals, who has lived a life like that because of the trauma that he experienced. And in the last episode, he’s a different guy than the guy who killed Rick Flag.” As convincing as Goff’s offer sounded, it was just another instance of someone trying to force Peacemaker to fight for their version of “peace,” so Peacemaker decided to break the cycle he had been trapped in since

Peacemaker is DC and HBO Max's latest offering that expands the DC Extended Universe. It stars John Cena as the titular Peacemaker. He is joined by Danielle Brookes as Leota Adebayo, Freddie Stroma as Vigilante, Robert Patrick as Auggie Smith, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and many more in the series' talented cast. Peacemaker and his allies are part of Project Butterfly in the show. Project Butterfly was organized by Amanda Waller to stop the "Butterflies." While much of this series' plot seems to be completely original, it does have some roots in DC Comics lore. However, there is more to Project Butterfly than meets the eye, and taking a closer look at it can give the audience an idea of what's really going on in Peacemaker. 5 It's A Brutal Alien-Extermination Team The mandate of Project Butterfly is to hunt down and exterminate an alien species colloquially known as "the Butterflies." They are an insectoid species that resemble butterflies, and they possess and mutate human beings. They bend the host to their will and seem to have their sites set on gaining some kind of foothold within the government and power structures of Earth. That's where Peacemaker and Project Butterfly comes in. They intend to hunt down and exterminate the Butterflies before they can enact whatever plan they have in mind. Both the Butterflies and Project Butterfly don't have a direct origin in DC Comics, though there are some potential comparison points with the mind-controllers like Queen Bee and the wormlike Mister Mind. However, even those comparisons require a stretch or two. 4 It Was Created And Organized By Amanda Waller And A.R.G.U.S Much like the Suicide Squad itself, Project Butterfly was organized by Amanda Waller and the organization known as A.R.G.U.S. As is often the case with Waller, she already had an eye on this growing threat and wants Peacemaker and his team to deal with these creatures as swiftly and lethally as possible. Of course, Waller herself isn't directly leading this team. That's where Clemson Murn (Cukwudi Iwuji) comes in. He is the actual leader of Project Butterfly and aims to keep the unruly likes of Peacemaker and Vigilante in line. 3 Who Or What Is A.R.G.U.S.? This isn't the first time that A.R.G.U.S. has cropped up in the DC Extended Universe. It already made its DCEU debut with Suicide Squad (2016). It's a clandestine government organization that deals with the metahuman and supernatural threats that frequently crop up in the DC Universe. It's most easily compared to Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. It isn't fair to call it a complete copy, but A.R.G.U.S. didn't show up until the New 52 in 2012. Its name. Another member of Waller’s Task Force X team, John Economos serves as the new team’s expert on tech and tactics. Smart – but not half as smart as he thinks he is – he’s the go-to guy for all the team’s PowerPoint presentations. Self-conscious about his operative skills and appearance, he starts out with an antagonistic relationship with Peacemaker who delights in playfully bullying his teammate and getting under his skin (or poorly dyed beard!)History[]Early Life[]Throughout the Series[]Season 1[]In A Whole New Whirled, some time after Peacemaker gets out of the hospital, he along with Emilia Harcourt, and Leota Adebayo target Peacemaker from all sides, with their weapons brandished. Clemson Murn then approaches Chris from inside his trailer. Murn proceeds to inform Chris that he reports directly to Amanda Waller. Later, Chris meets with his new task force team for dinner as agreed upon. Harcourt, Murn, Leota and Economos poke fun at Peacemaker for arriving in full costume with Eagly in the backseat of his car.In Best Friends, For Never, while Peacemaker escapes alongside Harcourt, Adebayo and Eagly, Economos changes Smith's car registration on the order of their team leader Clemson Murn. The tech wizz however gets a little too ahead of himself, though, because he changes Peacemaker's registration and his fingerprints in the system to point to his father Auggie. Murn is, understandably, not too pleased by Economos' decision to put the blame on Peacemaker's father because it will likely still lead back to Peacemaker one way or another.
