— -- (Editor's note: A previous version of this article misidentified the location of Owensboro, Ky.)The scene: Barbecue is one of the most unique and regionalized of American foods, and I have sampled many styles, from the whole-hog-with-vinegar of North Carolina to Memphis' BBQ spaghetti to burnt ends in Kansas City and the lesser-known Santa Maria BBQ of central California. But there is no hyper-regionalized style as specialized as that of Western Kentucky, mainly in its epicenter of Owensboro, where the slow-smoked meat of choice is not ribs or pulled pork or brisket, but rather mutton. Owensboro's next-best-known specialty is a hearty stew called burgoo, which contains - you guessed it - more mutton. Not only do the restaurants of Owensboro specialize in this offbeat menu item, each May the city hosts its famous International Bar-B-Q Festival, a major culinary event. The centerpiece? Mutton Glutton, a one- or two-day unlimited tasting of barbecued mutton, burgoo and other dishes.The two most famous eateries in Owensboro are Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn and Old Hickory Bar-B-Q, each of which has both passionate fans and naysayers. So of course, I visited both. Old Hickory is an innocuous looking restaurant on a small side street near downtown that resembles a Sizzler or Cracker Barrel, except for the big pile of wood stacked outside. It has a drive-thru, carry-out section, and one medium-sized dining room, divided into two parts by a low wall, with both booths and tables. Old Hickory has a mom-and-pop ambiance, with friendly waitress service. Tables have cards of local businesses set into the varnish, while the one page laminated menu also has ads for insurance agencies, tire shops and a liquor store. In contrast, Moonlite is enormous and always bustling, located on a busy suburban road lined with strip malls and fast food, with a vast parking lot and multiple dining rooms, plus a big carry-out operation. It has an a la carte menu but its centerpiece is an enormous buffet, offered at lunch and dinner, which most visitors partake of.Reason to visit: Something you've never tried beforeThe food: The story typically goes that in the early 19th century wool production in the U.S. boomed, meaning lots and lots of sheep were around, and once sheep got too old to produce good wool they were edible and plentiful. Calling itself 'The BBQ Capital of the World' [a moniker used by several other cities in the South], it hosts the International Bar-B-Q Festival in May of every year.The best thing about BBQ is that it varies so much from one region to the next, and Daviess County BBQ is known specifically for two things: Mutton & Burgoo. Mutton is the meat from an older sheep and Burgoo is basically a BBQ stew.It only seemed right to take this particular bike on a pilgrimage to the homeland to sample of a bit of both...Nice day for a ride.I started our ride on the Honda and Mark rode my KTM. It's always weird to watch someone else ride your bike. So the dude who let me borrow his Honda must think it's doubly weird watching two people ride his! Mark also had his GoPro on head for a second perspective on the day.B O R I N GThe thing about my 'No GPS' rule is that we often miss a few turns along the way. We only had to turn around three times on the way there.We switched rides early on. Why? But most Owensboro natives recommend Old Hickory to me. This establishment has been in business under one name or another for over 90 years while being passed down through several generations of the Foreman family, so they must know what they're doing.Ain't nothin' wrong with this view when you walk in the front door! They obviously do a healthy carry-out business.Each plate comes with sliced bread, onions, and pickles.Clockwise: Pork Ribs, Chopped Pork, & Mutton.Burgoo.VERDICT: I cannot offer a fair verdict in this case, and that's because I made a huge mistake. I should have perused the menu more carefully, or asked the waitress more questions. I should have ordered my meats "off the pit," as they say -- that would be dry with the sauce on the side. My experience would have been better had I ordered properly. The Pork Ribs were my favorite item on the plate because with a lower sauce-to-meat ratio it was possible to get a true taste of the BBQ. And they really couldn't have been cooked better. Along those same lines, the Mutton was more tender than I expected for such a tough meat. The texture and the taste reminded both Mark and I of a slow cooked beef roast (with BBQ sauce). So it wasn't a big surprise that the Burgoo, which contains plenty of Mutton, tasted much like a nice vegetable beef stew (with BBQ sauce).There was nothing remarkable about any of the side items, though the portion sizes were just right and I don't think people come here for potato salad or beans or fries, anyway. The meat menu is extensive: Mutton, Mutton Ribs, Pork, Pork Ribs, Chicken, Turkey, Ham, and Catfish. You can choose any three of those meats & two sides if you order the Combination Plate, and you'll definitely get your money's worth.I look forward to a return visit where I get my order right and I can sample some Mutton Ribs. I shall report back.These bikes couldn't be much more different, but they do have Orange in common. I'm not sure about Black, because I think the CBR's Black might really be Blue. I've become more familiar with Owensboro's black dip since my first visit, and I do like it, but I don't like my meats drenched in it. 2025-04-04One of the best things about a weekend road trip is getting to check out a place you’ve never been before! And if you’re looking for a fun city with good food, vibes and music, you’ve gotta put Owensboro, Kentucky on your list. If you’re only here for two days, then there are two things Owensboro is famous for that you absolutely need to experience: Our world-famous barbecue and our world-class bourbon! You can kick the first day off with one of the best brunch buffets in the state at Ole South Barbecue. Not only will you get to try tons of delicious breakfast items, but you can also taste the restaurant’s famous barbecue. And don’t forget to make yourself a bowl of burgoo while you’re there! Next up, head to downtown Owensboro for a tour of Green River Distilling Company. Kentucky is famous for its bourbon production, and you can take one of the top-ranked tours in the entire state at Green River! Tours are roughly an hour long, and this gorgeous distillery, coupled with its fascinating history, is one of the coolest things you’ll ever do in the Bluegrass State. You’ll even get to taste three different bourbons at the end! While you’re downtown, head over to our world-famous Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum and learn why Owensboro is the Bluegrass Music Capital of the World!
