On the other hand,if I use the NikonView, is it easier to save my edits as a "new"file rather than overwriting the existing one?NikonView operates the way you would expect it too. I am not 100% sure about your question, but basically NikonView comes with Nikon Editor. It has only basic operations and you will probably only want to use it for converting RAW to a format that your preferred editor can use and adjusting white balance and exposure compensation. It has a save as option which makes it easy.Picasa can open NEF files, but it doesn't look as nice as Nikon's processing of them to me. If I wanted to process a NEF file, I would use NikonEditor to convert it to TIFF, then gimp to make my changes.The problem with Picture project here is that it just overwrites it without asking or warning, and to me that is unacceptable. Picasa never adjusts the original image, but rather stores what changes have been made in a separate file. You can "export" an image which creates a new image with your modifications.Learning post processing is a lot of trial and error, so it is important to have the original to fall back on. It is a piece of junk It will overwrite your original file automatically when you clickOK (which is not what you want).NikonView is also free and is much better, check the Nikon websiteto download it.The D50 gives you two file type options. .JPG or .NEF. JPG filescan be edited by any program, Photoshop, PaintShopPro, Capture,Gimp, etc. NEF is Nikons RAW format. It is not an image per se, butrather the information collected from the sensor that issubsequently used to create an image.You can use Nikon Editor (which comes with NikonView) to convertNEF to other formats, such as JPG or 8 or 16 bit TIFF. There arenumerous other options, just search for workflow on the D50/D70forum.If you are not familiar with post processing, then you might wantto check out Picasa (google). Although strictly it is an organiser,It has some really simple to use adjustment tools. Irfanview isanother tool that has really good resize options.I personally use Gimp for most post processing. Simply choose therectangle selection, change it to aspect ratio or fixed size,depending on what you are trying to do, make the selection thenchoose crop image. My question is how do I save the edited or cropped version of a picture as a new file when I'm finished with it? With our old camera, we used whatever standard Windows program came with the computer and when I was done editing I just clicked "save" and the file would be saved as a new picture, so I would have both the original and the edited picture available online. I keep searching for how to do this with the Nikon software and I cannot find it.
