Hurricane Helene (American Red Cross)

Editors’ ReviewDownload.com staffSeptember 7, 2024Hurricane - American Red Cross is a must-have app if you live or travel in hurricane zones. It helps you with everything you need to prepare for, survive, and recover from a hurricane or tropical storm. Hurricane receives real-time alerts for your location and also finds evacuation routes, hospitals, and emergency services when necessary. It's an excellent teaching tool, too.ProsDisaster relief: With authoritative advice and facts from the American Red Cross, just having Hurricane on your phone can mean the difference between life and death when a hurricane hits.Real-time alerts: We could receive real-time alerts for hurricanes, floods, tornados, and other events via text, email, and other means. Two language options: We could toggle between English and Spanish language interfaces, making this app even more versatile in an emergency.Toolkit: The Toolkit menu accesses Flashlight, Strobe Light, and Alarm widgets; a plan-making tool, and first aid advice. You can even send "I'm safe" notifications to worried friends and family members.ConsText heavy: As we've noted with the other apps from the American Red Cross, about the only legit complaint we can make is that it looks and feels like a pamphlet from the American Red Cross. It's much more than that, though, but it would benefit from some multimedia additions.Bottom LineHurricane -- American Red Cross is authoritative, concise, useful, and packed with extras. If you're in an area prone to hurricanes, this is a must-have app to add to your device. What’s new in version 1.3.2For permission info: see description== 1.3.2 ==Fixed issue with shelters not refreshingFixed crashing issue when downloading new contentFixed issue with alerts not showing for current locationEmbedded storm tracker into appUpdated localisation == 1.3.1 ==Fixed crashing issuesFixed issue with alerts not showing properlyFixed local shelters not showing== 1.3 ==Fixed major issues with spanish devices not loading contentAdded flashlight/strobe lightAdded make a plan section TOPICS:American Red CrossOklahomaVolunteersHurricane HeleneRelief effortsTrainingShelter academiesNatural disastersOKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) — The American Red Cross of Oklahoma is recruiting and training new volunteers to help with relief efforts for Hurricane Helene and future climate disasters. The Central and Southwest Oklahoma Chapter and American Red Cross Tulsa Area Chapter are hosting three shelter academies in Oklahoma City where attendees can receive training as shelter workers and help families who are displaced by natural disasters. In Oklahoma City, trainings are happening at theAmerican Red Cross at Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits at 701 N Lindsay Ave. Oklahoma City, OK 73104 on the following dates:Monday, Sept. 30, 6-9 p.m.Thursday, Oct. 3, 12-3 p.m.Saturday, Oct. 5, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.In Tulsa, the trainings are at the American Red Cross at 10151 E 11th St. Tulsa, OK 74114 for the same dates and times.Sign up for a shelter academy here.Walk-in participants are also welcome. The academies will cover different roles and responsibilities within Red Cross shelters, like setting up, opening, operating, and closing a shelter, plus working with clients.“People always ask how they can help during disasters," said Michael Chancia, Red Cross Regional Disaster Workforce Engagement Manager. We created the shelter academies so people can quickly receive the training to become disaster workers. This lets them actively participate in the Red Cross mission and make an immediate impact.”Volunteers who complete the training will be able to respond to local and national relief operations.

MURRAY — Utahns on the ground in states hit hard by Hurricane Helene describe how bad the storm was for locals. Benjamin Donner, executive director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter said initial reports show Hurricane Helene was highly destructive. “Red Cross estimates that Hurricane Helene likely destroyed up to 10,000-plus homes based on this initial assessment,” Donner said. “More than 1,000 missing persons report filed just in one county in North Carolina.” Utahns dispatchedHe said the eight Utahns dispatched to North Carolina, Florida and Georgia are currently focused on providing safe shelter spaces. “That concern, that anxiety of, what’s it going to look like when I get to go back? We do everything we can to provide that kind of calming hand on the shoulder, any information that comes in that we’re able to give them updates on those neighborhoods, etc,” Donner said. “Once it is safe and everyone is allowed to start going back into those areas, then at that point we begin assisting with the damage assessment.” Volunteer Kirsti Dunn from North Ogden was in a shelter in Madison, Florida outside of Tallahassee when the storm hit. “We had maybe 200 clients here, and what we were doing is, everyone was in their room and sound asleep and then the loudspeaker came over just because of the storm’s ferocity that we needed to get everybody out into the hallways,” she said. As states in the southeast hit by Hurricane Helene begin to clean up, the Red Cross of Utah will begin deploying additional resources to the area.Been through it beforeDunn said some of the roofing came off of the school they’re in and power lines fell. She’s in an area that’s been hit before. “We have a client here who has a baby, she and her husband are here with a baby who’s about a month, month-and-a-half old, and that baby has now been through Hurricane Debbie. And now Hurricane Helene,” she said. Dunn said the family gave her some reassuring feedback. “They said that after their first trip here, which was Hurricane Debbie, that the Red Cross really, one, it gave them a safe place to be, but then it also gave them some ideas on how to prepare,” Dunn said, “For instance, if you’re going to be going, if a storm’s coming up and you need to go to a shelter, what should you take with you?” She spends her days helping care for the families at that shelter, many with young children. “One of the sheriffs that brought through one of their canines today, which is just adorable little 17-month-old pup,” she said. Providing informationThey also had a wing dedicated to treating people with more serious injuries. The shelter has a space where people’s pets are kept securely. She said what many of these people will face in the daylight is hard to come to terms with. “You want to make sure that the kids are good because they’ve been. download Hurricane - American Red Cross app .
