Drama with hints of a neo-noir crime thriller. While the follow-ups trade in mangled flesh and rivers of blood, Wan is a smart enough filmmaker to make an important distinction -- the film is sadistic to its characters, but not its audience. Jigsaw's torture devices and traps, his so-called games make for terrifying brutality, the acts of violence themselves are largely offscreen, relying on the audience's imagination to fill in the worst. And Saw certainly captured imaginations. The film debuted at Sundance in 2004 and quickly earned hype as an extreme, twisted, and entirely original horror film. Lionsgate ditched their plans to release the film direct-to-video and a box office phenomenon was born. It didn't just spawn its own success, it altered the entire horror genre where the so-called "torture porn" cottage industry sprouted around Saw's success. Even within the limited scope of the Saw franchise itself, it's incredible how much of Wan's fresh-from-film-school aesthetic and Whannell's narrative chutzpah have remained touchstones for the franchise all these years later. Not just the torture traps, frantic editing, and iconic creepy visuals (lookin' at you Billy), but the fundamental structure; victims of the game on the inside, detectives racing to solve the case on the outside, and a time-skipping, interweaving narrative that tees up to a major third-act surprise. Saw engaged a dark fantasy in the audience — how much blood would you shed to stay alive? That simple hook, Wan's flourish of crude style, and true innovation, Saw earns its spot in horror history. - Haleigh Foutch. Of ominous VHS tapes. With an amazing scope, expansive narrative, and charismatic main character, 10 Tapes was a true joy to follow from start to end, and still holds up now that the game is over. The Monument MythosProbably the most extensively covered of late, The Monument Mythos is an intense analogue horror series with a nostalgic, VHS lost media-style aesthetic. Expanding on common conspiracy theories, it explores an alternate history of America through a series of mockumentary-style videos that document bizarre and unexplainable events occurring near national landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty or Mount Rushmore. If you enjoy this one, there are plenty of other great analogue series out there, including the unnerving Walten Files, which gives Five Nights At Freddy’s meets Bendy and the Ink Machine vibes. That’s it. I’m stopping there. I could honestly go on for days about this wonderfully unique form of interactive storytelling, but alas, I have other demons to slay today. I hope this beginners guide to the world of ARGs and Unfiction provides you with a trailhead leading deep into the world of indie horror on the internet. But, for now, I’m going to go back and rewatch Nightmind talking about Everyman Hybrid for the hundredth time. Emily Myles, author of our April Fiction selection, "Sweeps Week," shares the horror origins of this story, her submission process, and how to get unstuck. Can you talk a little bit about where your idea from this story originated? What sparked the idea? Or is it something that you had been thinking about for a while? The root of this story came from a writing exercise I did as part of a Body Horror class I took with the brilliant Julian Jarboe in the Catapult days. The prompt was around desire and writing into the grotesqueness of that. I never finished it, but I hung onto these two characters and the imbalance of their desire. In the original, her blood and breast milk turned into Diet Coke and the Jill character ends up literally sucking her dry. (Gay rights!) Tell us a little bit about the process - how long did it take you to write the story? What was revision like?It took two years from start to finish—the original draft, once I removed the body horror elements, was finished in fall of 2022 and I was submitting it out pretty promiscuously and getting it (rightfully) kicked back to me by magazines. I generally write quickly, but at the time I had no idea how to revise my work or what feedback to ask for. It was very first idea, best idea energy when I started.I ended up retiring it for almost a year and then picking it up again and narrowing the scope of it intensely. When I started writing it I had a lot to say about capital C class and capital D desire and it ended up being heavy and indistinct as a result. Once I whittled it down to being about Lucy’s twin loves—Jill and her baby—and theThe horror-scope - Global, Local and Block scope in JS
While having an interesting and very creepy foundation (world overrun by zombies, survival of the fittest) doesn't quite make the cut as a "horror" anime but rather an "adventure" anime, because of all the action scenes. Higurashi on the other hand has a much more gloomy, tense, grotesque and disturbing element to it which is surprisingly addictive (a warning though, Higurashi is NOT for the faint of heart, the very first scene of the very first episode is enough to turn off anybody who isn't a fan of horror.)H.O.T.D has a much broader "scope" in that the world has been overrun by zombies a la Resident Evil and there is no "safe place" in the world. The sane have been driven mad from paranoia and succumbed to their primal instinct of "survival of the fittest." On the other hand, Higurashi takes place in a small village secluded from the city, which only adds to the creepy element; because of the village's seclusion there is no place to run for safety (unless you run for a couple of hours.)From the superficial description provided it would appear that these two animes are vastly different; however they are the same in that they provoke the viewer to delve deeper for "what it means to be human" H.O.T.D capitalizes it while Higurashi may not directly pose this question to the viewer. All in all, both are very good animes and if you enjoyed one you would certainly enjoy the other. eaper says... Each ofHorror-On-Sea 2025 Film Festival – ‘Horror-Scopes
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat is the third installment in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, a first-person shooter and survival horror video game developed by GSC Game World and published by BitComposer Entertainment. The game serves as a sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. The graphics engine has been updated to version 1.6 and includes DirectX 11 support. However, it still has the same basic system requirements used by all S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat was first released in the Commonwealth of Independent States, Czech Republic, and Germany on October 2, 2009. The American version was released on February 2, 2010, the European version was released on February 5 (2010) with the game releasing on February 23 (2010) in Australia. On March 6th, 2024, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat was released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles as part of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone trilogy.Gameplay[]This game combines elements of survival horror (ammo scavenging, frightening atmosphere with powerful monsters), first-person shooters ("twitch-based" aiming, i.e. no leveling system or "skillsets"), and role-playing games (inventory management, quests, character interaction, armors, and defense stats). The gameplay changes from Shadow of Chernobyl and Clear Sky include an improved HUD, with better stealth support, a much improved side quest system, and improved A-Life (modified using the players' best-liked elements from the first two games in the series), featuring NPCs now exploring the different areas during daytime before resting in safe areas at night. New features include emissions having a chance to spawn artifacts in already looted anomalies while killing everything outside at the time (NPCs now seek shelter), sleep being added to the game (available in friendly bases - Skadovsk, Yanov Station, and the Laundromat in Pripyat), a free-play mode available after finishing the game, and achievements - each coming with its own advantages/disadvantages.Changes from Clear Sky (i.e. customization of armor/weapons, detectors needed for finding artifacts, etc.) remained in the game as well. However, the faction wars system was dropped to streamline gameplay.New features include variants of the PSO-1 scope and the SUSAT scope with each having its own effect, such as integral night vision or different zoom level. A new weapon, the Eliminator shotgun, was added, based on the Armsel Protecta. The upgrade tree system returns from Clear Sky, although with a few differences: technicians can apply most upgrades to weapons, however in the case of Cardan and Nitro they will need tools in order. Surprising viewers with its inventive use of supernatural elements. More than just a special effects showcase, The Mummy is a testament to the power of old-fashioned storytelling, with its likable characters, witty dialogue, and timeless themes of love, loyalty, and redemption. 4 Aliens (1986) A Thrill Ride With Heavy Emotional Stakes Your Rating Aliens 10/10 Release Date July 18, 1986 Aliens is a 1986 Sci-Fi classic by writer and director James Cameron. Starring Sigourney Weaver as Ellen Ripley, it's widely considered one of the best Sci-Fi Horror films ever made. Ripley must band together with a group of Colonial Marines to investigate a disaster at a terraforming colony. Building upon the haunted-house-in-space terror of its predecessor, Aliens expands the scope and scale of Alien movies, transforming it into a pulse-pounding action epic. Sigourney Weaver's Ellen Ripley, the sole survivor of the first film, is a revelation. She's a heroine whose strength, vulnerability, and fierce maternal instincts make her one of cinema's most iconic characters. Aliens' action sequences are a white-knuckle thrill ride, from the claustrophobic horror of the first encounter with the Xenomorphs to the explosive final battle in the heart of the alien hive. James Cameron, the master of a good sequel, ensures that each set piece is more intense than the last. More than just a showcase for impressive action, Aliens is also a deeply emotional story about family bonds, the trauma of survival, and the lengths we will go to protect those we love. 3 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) Come With Me If You Want To Eat Popcorn Your Rating Terminator 2: Judgment Day 9/10 Release Date July 3, 1991 Runtime 137 minutes Director James Cameron Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a sci-fi action film directed by James Cameron, set ten years after the original.
