A white woman in New York City has earned the nickname “Citi Bike Karen” after a video went viral of her trying to steal a Black youth’s rentable bicycle. The incident happened over the weekend, and social media sleuths were quick to allegedly identify the woman in the clip.The original video showed the woman, who appeared to be an employee of NYC Health + Hospitals, trying to wrangle a Citi Bike out of the hands of a young Black man who already had it. She desperately screamed for help and at one point started to fake cry. The person behind the camera noted that she didn’t shed one tear as she was easily able to go from “crying” back to normal.A white male dressed in scrubs behind her suggested that the youth let her take the bike, but he explained that it was already associated with his account. Finally, when the apparent hospital employee said she should take another available bike on the rack, she backed off. Check out the clip below.Social media response to the video was swift. Critics likened her behavior to that of Carolyn Bryant, the white woman who cried wolf and caused Emmett Till’s murder. Some sleuths online were allegedly able to identify the woman as Sarah Jane Comrie, a medical physician’s assistant employed with Bellevue Hospital. They were able to glean the information from her ID card visible in the video.In response to their purported employee going viral, the Bellevue health system shared a statement addressing the situation.“We have recently become aware of an incident that occurred off campus over the weekend and appears to involve one of our employees,” the statement read, as seen below. “We are sorry this happened, and we are reviewing the incident. NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue is committed to providing the highest quality of care to all New Yorkers with dignity, cultural sensitivity, and compassion.”

However, the latest example that recently occurred in New York City reminded us of the biggest Karen to ever exist: Carolyn Bryant Donham. It’s only been a few weeks since the notorious Emmett Till accuser died last month at the age of 88, peacefully in hospice care somewhere in Westlake, Louisiana. Six decades prior, she infamously reported an unwarranted cry for help that led to the gruesomely inhumane murder of the aforementioned 14-year-old Black teenager.In 2023, we sadly still see the same racist-driven trope being used by a modern day Carolyn Bryant Donham; this one’s name is Sarah Jane Comrie. Carolyn Bryant Donham, Emmett Till’s Accuser Who Sparked Lynching, Dies At 88From unenthusiastic screams for “Help!” to elevating the fantasy by shouting “Please get off of me!” even though not one person put a hand on her, Comrie did exactly what famed attorney Ben Crump describes in his tweet seen above by weaponizing her tears (or lack thereof!) in an attempt to wrongfully criminalize a group of young Black men. It’s the same frame of mind that Donham had decades prior during a time when the odds were way more in the favor of racist white women.Even though we live in a time where thankfully the young men were able to flip the script on Comrie using the power of social media, the viral clip itself is a bit disheartening when you see a handful of white men swooping in to “save” her — one even suggests the main victim of her accusations reset a bike that he already paid for. Wait…what?! Although Carolyn Bryant Donham is literally a thing of the past, and Sarah Jane Comrie’s future as a physician’s assistant at Bellevue Hospital in NYC is looking rather bleak, the same can be said about our future as a society if people like them continue to use the preset prejudices of America to their favor.
