Like this year? Thu, 14 Sep 2023 01:00:36 +0000 We find out if these new limited-edition menu items taste as good as they look in the poster.People in Japan are being inundated with tsukimi burgers right now, as all the big-name chains celebrate the Japanese custom of “tsukimi” (“moon-viewing“) in September. While each chain has been putting its own unique twist on its burger range, one feature that most of the burgers have in common is egg as the star ingredient, given that “tsukimi” is the word commonly used for dishes with egg in Japan, as it resembles the moon.â–¼ That’s the case over at Lotteria, where egg has been added to four new burgers in what the chain is calling its Hanjuku Tsukimi (Sunny-side Up Tsukimi) range.Unlike other burger chains, which tend to bring back the same burger or burgers each year, with only one or two new items (we’re looking at you, McDonald’s), all the burgers at Lotteria are new for this year.Released on 7 September, there are four new burgers in the collection — the largest number of tsukimi burgers currently in the industry — and our resident burger inspector Egawa Tasuku purchased them all, taking them back home for a closer look at each one.The first burger up for inspection is the Hanjuku Tsukimi Wafuu Zeppin Cheese Burger (Sunny-side-up Tsukimi Japanese-style Exquisite Cheeseburger), priced at 570 yen (US$3.90).The bun used here is the usual Lotteria variety, which we’ve come to love over the years. Other chains opt for this type of soft, buttery bun only for their Tsukimi moon-viewing burgers, but Lotteria uses it year-round for its other burgers as well.Three of the four burgers use a Japanese-style sauce containing ginger, tamari soy sauce, dark soy sauce, sauna sugar, and oyster sauce, and this one contained a good serving of it, slathered on the top bun and atop the fried egg.Peeking into the egg revealed that it really was soft and gooey, a feature that makes these stand out from the competition, as a number of big chains have been adding firm-yolked eggs to their burgers. Runny eggs are beloved in Japan, so this gives Lotteria the edge on the competition.Out of all the burgers, this one was the most orthodox, containing egg, cheese, Japanese-style sauce, and a beef patty. It was a delicious introduction to the range, raising our expectations for the next burger in the lineup, which was…â–¼ The Hanjuku Tsukimi Wafuu Umakara Zeppin Cheese Burger (Sunny-side-up Tsukimi Spicy Umami Exquisite Cheese Burger), priced at 590 yen.The sauce used in this burger is as red as the packaging, and that’s because it’s Sriracha sauce. Egg as well.â–¼ Beyond the egg, we get to see some differences — cheese for the two on the right…â–¼ …and beneath the patty, nothing but bun for the two on the left, but sukiyaki sauce for the burger on the right! The regular Tsukimi and Cheese Tsukimi burgers tasted as great as they always do, but the burger everyone is most curious about is the new Sukiyaki version. The sukiyaki sauce inside the burger didn’t look like a lot, but as soon as you bite into it, you realise the amount is spot-on for all the ingredients. It was sweet yet salty, and the flavour of the cheese worked well with the egg to add a creamy richness to the sukiyaki sauce. The buns were delightfully chewy, buttery, and slightly sweet, creating a fantastic blend of harmonious flavours that was moreish and addictive.â–¼ The chain’s 31-year history of making Tsukimi Burgers shows in their expert ability to add ingredients that enhance the flavour rather than detract from it.Now we move on to the KFC tsukimi burgers, of which there are four this year, all under the moniker of “Torori” (“Melty”):The Torori Cheese Tsukimi Chicken Fillet Sandwich, the Torori Tsukimi Chicken Fillet Sandwich (top row in the image below), and the Cheese Torori Tsukimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Sandwich (“Melty Tsukimi Japanese-style Chicken Cutlet Sandwichâ€) and the Torori Tsukimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Sandwich (bottom row).â–¼ Non-cheese burgers cost 460 yen while cheese versions cost 490 yenComparing sizes, we can see that the KFC burgers (bottom, below) are slightly smaller in diameter than the McDonald’s ones (top, below).Lifting the top bun off the Japanese-style KFC burgers revealed a big mound of sauce and shredded cabbage, which clung nicely to the bread, and two discs of fried egg.â–¼ The regular Chicken Fillet burgers contained lettuce instead of cabbage.â–¼ Beneath the egg, the Japanese-style burgers had a square-shaped fried cutlet patty…â–¼ …and the other two had a big chunk of chicken.Beneath the meat, buns on both, although the Japanese-style ones had sopped up the soy sauce nicely.â–¼ The katsu patties were firm, crispy, and really well-made.â–¼ As for size, these Japanese-style cutlets were thickkkk! They were also surprisingly moist and soft, and the sauce-to-cutlet ratio was just right.Raw or barely cooked eggs are a signature ingredient in a number of Japanese dishes, and the fried eggs here were super soft, creating a great complement to the Japanese-style cutlet and sauce. If we were judging this on eggs and meat alone, KFC would take the win for quality and flavour, but considering each burger as a whole, we have to give the trophy to McDonald’s. While the KFC burgers tasted absolutely delicious, the ones with cheese were overpowered byThe Vinyl Anachronist: 2 Burger -Cassell's
Winner for us was the McDonald’s Sukiyaki Tsukimi Burger. We’re not done with the taste test, though, so let’s check out the new contenders, starting with the Torori Hanjuku Tsukimi collection from Lotteria.â–¼ There are six moon-viewing burgers on the menu at Lotteria.Out of the six burgers, three are new this year, so those are the ones we decided to try.▼ Teriyaki Chicken (470 yen), Teriyaki Chicken Rice (490 yen), and Teriyaki Rice (490 yen).”“Torori” translates to “Melty” while “hanjuku” describes an egg that’s only half-cooked, resulting in a soft and gooey yolk. The sweet and salty teriyaki sauce was fantastic in all of these, but our favourite was the Teriyaki Chicken.Lotteria’s Teriyaki Rice Burger was a bit of a disappointment as it seemed to fall short of the quality were used to from other chains. As these burgers contained chicken, the closest thing we could compare them to were the KFC Tsukimi Burgers, but we have to say they weren’t as good as the ones from KFC.Next up to the tasting plate we have the two moon-viewing burgers from Wendy’s: the Tsukimi BBP Burger (790 yen) and the Tsukimi BBP Chicken Burger (690 yen). These burgers stand out from the competition with firm yolks in the eggs, along with two pieces of crispy bacon and two hashed potatoes.â–¼ This was a hefty burger, with the moon hardly visible beneath the beef patty, cheese and hashed potatoes.Unlike the other burgers, which had a very Japanese-style taste to them, these burgers displayed bold American flavours, with a smoky BBQ sauce permeating all the ingredients. This was the wildest moon-viewing burger of them all, straying from convention but delivering delicious flavours, and on par with McDonald’s and KFC in terms of quality. ▼ Now all we can see when we look at the Wendy’s logo, aside from the word “mom” hidden in her collar, is a full moon around her head. And now to the final burger in today’s lineup– the Tsukimi Focaccia from Mos Burger (520 yen). This one is extra special, as the promo for it was produced in collaboration with Sailor Moon. Will the anime magic make this one taste any different?  Well, for starters, it looks different to all the others, as it uses focaccia bread instead of burger or rice buns.â–¼ This one has a deliciously runny egg inside. The star of the show here, though, is the sausage, which gives it an entirely different taste to all the other burgers we’ve tried this year. It was plump and delicious, and was perfectly matched with the sweet sauce, making it one of our favourites this season. So, with our stomachs now swollen after trying moon-viewing burgers from a total of six.
