BeaTunes News beaTunes 4.5 EA2 beaTunes 4.5 EA1 In the last couple of months I've been working on switching some things under beaTunes' hood as well as in its user interface. Today, I'm happy to release the first Early Access version of this effort. So what has changed?Under the hood, many third party libraries beaTunes depends upon were updated. Probably the biggest step was from Hibernate 3.4 to 4.3. But other libs like Jython, Groovy, and JRuby were updated as well.Additionally, some of the database caching code has been streamlined for greater efficiency. On the surface, beaTunes 4.5 features a fresh new look—much more in line with Yosemite and the upcoming El Captain. Library, Analysis, Inspection, and Charts are now accessible via a vertical mode button panel, removing some visual clutter. With the same idea in mind, both the sidebar (what used to be the playlist tree) and the status bar can now be hidden via the View menu. Also, the Matching Songs and Album Info buttons are now only visible when the main song table is visible as well. The goal of this update is not to add a lot of new features. However, some of you will be very pleased to see that it has gotten much easier to write computed keys to the comment field (simply check a box in the analysis options). Also, alternatively to valid ID3 TKey values, one can now embed Open Key values as key names (box in the general preferences). Furthermore, there is a new inspector and a bunch of other little improvements. One of them being a dedicated button in the matching songs panel, that allows adding the selected song to the current playlist with a simple click or press of a button (keyboard shortcut), instead of having to drag it.Because I didn't try to go overboard with new stuff, this Early Access release is close to production quality. However, it still needs some testing. Please download it and try it out. As always with Early Access versions—the software will expire, in this case in a week. If the real thing isn't released by then, I will post another EA release in time.I'm looking forward to your feedback.Downloads beaTunes 4.5 EA1 for OS X beaTunes 4.5 EA1 for 64 Bit Windows beaTunes 4.5 EA1 for 32 Bit Windows (requires QuickTime)UpdatePlease do not download EA1 anymore. Better support for Task beaTlets.Labels: 64bit, Java7, Release Copying data to the comment field Unfortunately, iTunes does not support a number of fairly standard fields—most prominently probably musical key. To help solve this problem, there have always been beaTunes plugins that copy certain information to the comments or grouping field. Those plugins can be installed via the beaTunes preferences. However, it seems that many people want to have more control over what exactly is written to the comments field. Some prefer OK-Notation, others want musical keys, yet others want to come up with a completely new notation. While it is possible to code up a new Java plugin for beaTunes that suits your personal needs, many people find this too much trouble. This is why I introduced beaTlets a while back. beaTlets allow you to script beaTunes plugins using Groovy, JRuby, or Jython. In other words, instead of installing, Java, Maven, an IDE etc. you just have to code a single class in whatever text editor you like (TextMate, JEdit or Notepadd++ come to mind), drop it into the beaTunes plugin directory and restart beaTunes. But before beaTunes 3.5.17 it hasn't been possible to script a SongAnalysisTask. That's the kind of plugin that works like the KeyToComment plugin you might have installed via the beaTunes preferences. It shows up in the Analysis Options dialog, when you click on Analyze. So... if you're interested in controlling how the key field is copied to some other field, please check out the new sample code for Song Analysis Task beaTlets. When rolling your own, please keep in mind, that any error messages are dumped to the beaTunes log, the file name of your beaTles must reflect its class name, and that no two entities can have the same name (you might have to uninstall plugins with the same name).Enjoy.Labels: beaTlet, iTunes, OK-Notation, Plugin Eco Spinning For all you DJs, this may be a little off topic. But I know for a fact that loads of people use beaTunes for creating spinning playlists. You know, those stationary bikes, installed in endless rows in the your gym. Bicyclists spinning away, generating lots of unused power...Well, it does not have to

BeaTunes News How can I find the BPM for DRM-encrypted Apple Music songs? With its streaming service Apple Music unfortunately re-introduced Digital Rights Management (DRM), which makes it very hard for third party apps to decrypt and analyze downloaded music files. But did you know there is a way around decrypting and decoding? While beaTunes cannot access the raw audio for a thorough content analysis, it can access the track's metadata, i.e. its artist, album, title, and length. This is often enough information to look up BPM values in beaTunes' central database, which have been uploaded by other beaTunes users. So to download BPM values for your Apple Music tracks, just follow these simple steps: In beaTunes, select the tracks you want BPM values for. Open the File menu and choose Analyze. In the Analysis Options dialog, enable only the Estimate BPM option. Ensure that Use online resources is turned on. Then start downloading BPM values by clicking on Analyze.Note that since this operation depends on what other users have uploaded and whether the metadata matching is successful, your mileage may vary: some tracks may not be in the database yet, others may have inaccurate BPM values. That said, it certainly beats having no BPM values at all.Labels: Apple Music, BPM, TipsAndTricks

BeaTunes News Genre-Based Time Signature Estimation As explained recently, beaTunes has supported an MPM and Time Signature column for a long time, but the automatic computation of time signatures left much to be desired. Today's update is not going to make beaTunes perfect, but it's a big step towards better time signature values. Here's what's new: When calculating BPM with the OnsetPeak algorithm, beaTunes also calculates the time signature. I added some logic that takes the Genre field into account. So if the genre is Waltz, beaTunes will now set the time signature to ¾—guaranteed. The same is true for the corresponding signatures of Paso Doble, Polka, etc. Note, that this only works, if the genre field contains a proper genre value.Another caveat is the Use online resources checkbox. If it is checked, the logic described above will not be used and you are essentially giving up control, accepting whatever is in the central database. For the moment, those values will most likely be wrong. As I roll out some additional changes, the situation will improve over time. But for the moment, it's best to simply leave that online resources box unchecked.I hope these changes continue to make beaTunes more useful for dancers. As always, you can download the update from the download section of the website. Most important changes in 4.5.8 Improved time signature detection based on known genres (e.g. Waltz, Paso Doble, …). Fixed issue when sorting the main table by tags. Improved handling of mp3 files tagged with the outdated ID3v1. Recognize mp4 as audio format in folder-based collections, and make sure non-iTunes fields are written in iTunes-based collections.Labels: ballroom, BPM, dancing, id3, MPM, Release, Time Signature

Online Song Bpm Checker Did you ever wonder what the BPM column in your favorite music player could be used for? Well, first you have to fill it. There are multiple tools that let you tap the beat to some song and then write the BPM value into iTunes/Music. This is probably a good method, if you have—say—10 songs. If you have more than 10 songs, you need a tool for automatic BPM detection. One like beaTunes. Once you have determined the BPM of songs in your library, you can build playlists based on the tempo of your tracks. It makes it a lot easier to find those slow dance, running or roadtrip songs.
