I am currently running 32-bit Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire D270 netbook (Atom CPU, 1GB RAM).I want to install Ubuntu 12.04. Should I install the 32-bit or 64-bit version? mickmackusa8501 gold badge9 silver badges19 bronze badges asked Aug 19, 2013 at 10:17 2 It depends on with Atom CPU you have. Some are 64 bit capable and some not. If your CPU number starts by Z then it's a 32 bits CPU, if it starts with N,D,S or a number then it's a 64 bits one.Anyway, the safe option here is to install the 32 bit version. You only have 1 Gb of memory, so you are not really gaining a lot installing a 64 bit OS. answered Aug 19, 2013 at 10:21 Javier RiveraJavier Rivera35.4k11 gold badges90 silver badges110 bronze badges Better install 32 bit version of Linux. Your configuration may support 64 bit but you have less than 2GB RAM and not so powerful processor, so you shouldn't lose performance. By the way Unity desktop in Ubuntu 12.04 use a lot of system resources, better install Ubuntu 13.04 or the old style gnome desktop:1) Open a terminal2) Type: sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback3) Type your password4) Type Y when prompt5) Reboot and select desktop environment before logging in6) Login and enjoy gnome :) answered Aug 19, 2013 at 10:28 DeusDeus1781 silver badge9 bronze badges To be safe, you should install 32-bit, as you don't have much performance specs. answered Aug 19, 2013 at 10:52 BrickBrick1011 bronze badge Doesn't really matter in your case. If in doubt, just use 32 bit. As others pointed out, the benefits of using a 64 bit OS are not really of any relevance for your system. :) Also you might want to use the latest version of Ubuntu instead (13.04 at the time of writing) because of a lot of performance improvements to Ubuntu in later releases. answered Aug 19, 2013 at 11:48 GladenGladen2,7364 gold badges22 silver badges43 bronze badges You must log in to answer this question. It was powered by an intel atom n455. That atom supported the 64 bit x86 ISA. Obviously, that doesn't 100% mean the build used on the cr- bit. You are using an out of date browser. I was going to install Windws 7 64 but saw that EMT64 is not part of the CPU instructions set.Today, another friend has brough me an ACER netbook which also features the Atom N2600 cpu. Once again, EMT64 is not part of the instruction sets. But the Intel website for this CPU states that it is a 64bit processor?!?! I've googled this issue with no luck! Can anybody help? You may also need to enable it in the BIOS. #3 No, it is not an error message.I simply want somebody to explain to me why EMT64 is not part of the CPU instruction set. The bios on the ACER netbook gives me no indication, but the ASUS Bios told me that EMT64 was "Disabled". Is it possible that it's one of the "Embedded Options" for this CPU? May 2, 2010 1,543 0 20,160 #4 It's possible, since it's ultimately up to the OEM's. You should be able to change it in the Asus's bios.
