Oracle's VirtualBox, a free and open-source virtualization app, has long let you run almost any x86 operating system virtually on compatible host machines with Linux, macOS, or Windows. But it now also offers an ARM-based version for Apple silicon Macs that supports a select few ARM-based Linux and FreeBSD systems. We like that VirtualBox continues to evolve, but competitors (including some that are free) go much further with their ARM support and work more smoothly. Because of increasingly compelling alternatives, we lowered its score by half a point since the time of our last review. The paid Parallels Desktop allows you to install ARM-based versions of Windows and other instances of macOS on an Apple silicon Mac and enables more dependable system integrations, so it remains our Editors' Choice winner.Is VirtualBox Really Free?VirtualBox is completely free to use, but that's no longer a differentiating aspect. VMware's apps (Fusion Pro for macOS hosts and Workstation Pro for Linux and Windows hosts) are also now free for everyone.
