Update: There have been subsequent releases of Remote Desktop Reporter since this announcement. For the latest information, visit the Remote Desktop Reporter product page.RDPSoft is proud to announce the introduction of Version 1.1 of its Remote Desktop and Terminal Server Reporting utility, RDPSoft Remote Desktop Reporter! Here are a few of the feature highlights found in this release:The RDPSoft Remote Desktop Reporter is a specially designed Windows utility that:Polls and collects information about Remote Desktop sessions from one or more computers on your network.Provides a reporting engine so that you can produce both on-demand and scheduled reports covering a wide variety of user and server activity.Provides a rich filtering interface that you can use to reduce the volume of information in your reports. After installation, you start by telling it which servers and workstations on your network you would like to poll for Remote Desktop / Terminal Server information. You can control how frequently this polling is done – the default is every 2 minutes. The RDPSoft Remote Desktop Reporter Service actually conducts the polling in an agentless fashion – you simply assign this service an account that has rights to poll this information from computers over the network. There is no need to deploy agent services on each polled computer.By default, RDPSoft Remote Desktop Reporter’s installation package installs a separate, special instance of Microsoft SQL Server Express. For most networks, this should provide plenty of storage for periodic reporting. However, you can also specify a separate, non-local Microsoft SQL Server if you already have a dedicated database server on your network when you first setup the software.Version 1.1 of RDPSoft Remote Desktop Reporter contains over 15 reports across the following categories:User Session Activity (Who is logging on where, how long they are logged on, their ratio of active to idle time in their sessions, etc).Program Tracking (What programs each user is running, how frequently they run the programs, the most frequently run programs, etc).Hourly User Activity (See a breakdown, hour by hour, of when your Remote Desktop users are active, idle, or disconnected.)User Productivity (Quickly build a robust estimate of each user’s productivity across all Remote Desktop sessions they are connected to).Client Workstations and Addresses (Track the client workstation names and IP addresses your users are connecting from).Display Metrics (Determine the most frequently used screen resolutions and color depth your users utilize).Bandwidth Metrics (Find out, by server and by user,

Tiers to relay email. As of this writing, SMTP2Go offers a plan that supports up to 1000 emails per month, and up to 200 emails per day. SendGrid offers a plan that supports up to 3000 emails per month, and up to 100 emails per day. Both of these plans should be more than sufficient for normal email volumes generated by our applications.Common Reasons For Email Delivery Failures, and How To Troubleshoot Them1.) You may need to add an exception to your internal SPAM filtering/mail quarantine/mail rules so that our software’s alert and reporting emails make it to your inbox.2.) Some email servers impose a default mail message size, which you may need to increase, especially if you are relaying scheduled reports from the Remote Desktop Commander Suite and Sysmundo applications. If the Remote Desktop Commander Suite cannot contact the email server to send a scheduled report, it will post a warning in the Application Event Log from the RDPSoft Remote Desktop Reporter Service, around the time that the scheduled report was created. Look for these warning messages for further details. If no warning messages are found, contact your own mail administrator, and have them look through the SMTP logs around the time our software was attempting to send a scheduled report or attempting to email an alert. Also check the mail servers quarantine area, and release the message and create an exception if needed. In most scenarios, even if a scheduled report cannot be emailed successfully, you can still pull it up from the ScheduledReports folder in either the Remote Desktop Commander Suite or Sysmundo. The default directories for these reports are:C:\Program Files (x86)\RDPSoft\Remote Desktop Commander\ScheduledReports (Remote Desktop Commander Suite)andC:\Program Files\RDPSoft\Sysmundo\Reports (Sysmundo)

Created OnDecember 30, 2020Over time, you may notice that your IP geolocation data in Remote Desktop Commander’s security reports and the User IP Geolocation Dashboard has become less accurate. This is due to the fact that IP blocks get reassigned over time to different ISPs around the world. You can remedy this by downloading new IP geolocation information and updating the Remote Desktop Commander Suite’s geolocation table in your SQL Server. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to do that:1.) Download the latest IP Geolocation database from On the system/VM running our Remote Desktop Commander Suite, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\RDPSoft\Remote Desktop Commander in Windows Explorer3.) Rename the old ipdb.csv file in this directory to ipdb.old4.) Unzip the newly downloaded geolocation file into the C:\Program Files (x86)\RDPSoft\Remote Desktop Commander directory5.) Open up the Remote Desktop Commander Configuration Tool, navigate to the Database tab, and click the Reload IP Geolocation Database button.6.) Let this process complete fully, then relaunch the Remote Desktop Commander Client. The User IP Geolocation Dashboard should now geolocate global IP addresses more accurately. You can also now rerun your login and login failure reports if you want to obtain more accurate results.

You may need to change various settings, like port and other authentication settings for SMTP email relay to work properly. While Microsoft 365 Apps and Exchange Online is a popular platform for sending organizational mail, Microsoft’s increasing security restrictions can make it tricky to relay through. If you want to relay alerts and reports from our software directly through Exchange Online, please review this article in depth to allow SMTP AUTH relay for our application. However, given that Microsoft will soon be removing SMTP AUTH altogether from Exchange Online services in September 2025, a better option is either to set up a lightweight SMTP server to relay through on a Windows Server VM in your organization, OR to use a third party SMTP relay service that offers a free tier, like SendGrid or SMTP2GO.Option 1 – Set Up A Windows VM Based SMTP Server For RelayAs Microsoft annoyingly has also been deprecating and/or removing their IIS based SMTP Service in their Windows Server operating systems, we recommend using a free open source SMTP Server like E-MailRelay. Please review this site for documentation and how to download and install the Windows version.Option 2 – Sign Up For a Free Tier at a Cloud Based Email Provider Like SendGrid or SMTP2GO To Send EmailsBoth SendGrid and SMTP2Go offer free

If your scheduled Remote Desktop Commander reports suddenly start showing no data, or you stop receiving new reports, please double check each of the possible culprits to resolve your issue.1.) The Remote Desktop Reporter Service account password may have expired or may have been changed. If so, please reassign a new password to the Remote Desktop Reporter Service in the Remote Desktop Commander Configuration Tool, and restart the Remote Desktop Reporter Service. Then, verify that you see recent poll times in the Add/Manage Servers area of the Remote Desktop Commander Configuration Tool.If you cannot restart the service even after verifying that the service account and password are incorrect, you may have a licensing issue. Please use the Licensing Troubleshooter here for assistance in fixing your licensing.2.) The SQL Server database that Remote Desktop Commander uses to store data may be full. If you are using SQL Server Express, this edition is hard limited to 10 GBs of storage. Go into the Remote Desktop Commander Configuration Tool, Application Settings, Database Tab, and review the free space in your SQL Express database. If you have zero or close to zero free space, lower the retention days for both the Session and Agent data. Then click the “Save” button to stop and restart the service. During the service’s database maintenance window at midnight, it will remove old data, freeing up space for new incoming data. Then, your reports should start showing data again within 24-36 hours. Also, turn on automatic weekly database reindexing, as this will also increase available free space in your SQL database. If you are not using SQL Server Express, but do not allow the RDPReporter (Remote Desktop Commander) database to auto-grow, consider both increasing its size on disk with the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and potentially reducing its retention days, as mentioned above. Please also review this comprehensive article that has more tips on reducing database growth rates.3.) If you are using a full version of SQL Server, make sure that the Remote Desktop Reporter Service account still has login rights with db_datareader and db_datawriter permissions to access its SQL database (default name RDPReporter). The Remote Desktop Commander Suite has the capability to collect a massive amount of data over time. Therefore, it is important that you stay on top of your database retention settings in order to make sure that old data is removed nightly to create free space for new data being collected during the current day.To adjust Database Retention settings, open up the Remote Desktop Commander Configuration Tool, select Application Settings, and then select the Database tab.In this tab, lower the retention settings for session data and agent data. By default, retention settings are 60 days for session data and 3 days for agent data. So you could lower session data to 30 days and agent data to 2 days or 1 days, for instance. Also, check the option to turn on weekly reindexing of high volume database tables. Once these changes are made, click Save Changes. At the next database maintenance interval, which by default is every night at midnight, the Remote Desktop Reporter Service will purge out old records according to your new retention settings, which should free up space. If you want to clean out space immediately, change the maintenance time from midnight to a few minutes ahead of the current system time, and click Save Changes. This will start the maintenance process soon thereafter. Once the database free space is reclaimed, change the maintenance time back to midnight and click Save Changes again.Tip 1: If you are running Microsoft SQL Server Express and are continually running out of free space, consider migrating our software to use a full version of SQL Server Standard OR consider using Microsoft Azure SQL on a monthly subscription basis.Tip 2: You can also control how much data is generated by adjusting the software’s master and agent polling intervals. If you are using
