Throughout his tenure as the leader of the X-Men, Professor Charles Xavier has had many loyal partners by his side. While fellow mutants like Jean Grey, Scott Summers and Hank McCoy have been by his side for ages, there’s perhaps no more iconic of a companion than his ability-enhancing, mutant-detecting device, Cerebro. Over the years, Cerebro has been there to help Professor X and the rest of the X-Men through all of Marvel’s major events involving the X-Men. When M-Day happened, it was Emma Frost and Cerebro who first detected the birth of Hope Summers, the first mutant born after House Of M. When Jonathan Hickman revolutionized that status quo of the mutants in the Marvel landscape, Cerebro was right in the center of it. Though it may be just a piece of machinery, Cerebro is as much a part of the X-Men as any mutant under the Professor’s care. Here's what you need to know about Cerebro. 10 Jean Grey Was Used To Calibrate The First Cerebro Because Jean Grey was the first official student enrolled in Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters, it makes sense that she would become the first mutant that Xavier tested Cerebro on. Though Xavier was still pretty early on in his career as a professor to the mutant masses, he still knew that he had to think globally and act locally. So during his time teaching the young Jean Grey how to use her powers effectively, he would also use her presence as a means to calibrate Cerebro and make sure that it would be able to pick up mutants nearby as well as making certain that Cerebro would not become overwhelmed by mutants of Jean’s caliber. 9 How Cerebro Works For casual fans, there may be a lot of confusion surrounding just how Cerebro does what it does. Well, Cerebro is designed to enhance the powers of telepaths by strengthening their brainwaves. When wearing Cerebro, the brain also works at a much quicker pace than it would normally as the neurons of the brain are fired off at a much more rapid pace. While Cerebro is effective for mutants of Xavier’s caliber and above, most versions of Cerebro would overwhelm anyone who is not telepathic or of a similar caliber to him. 8 Cerebro Has A Tertiary Function Over the years, Cerebro has taken on many different functions for Xavier and his institute, but one that many fans may have overlooked is the fact that Cerebro is often in charge of keeping things at the school running properly. Beyond its capacity for locating and tracking mutants, Cerebro is also an artificial intelligence that Xavier trusts with making sure the school has everything it

Download Cerebro for iOS Download Cerebro for Android. Sharing between Cerebro and other apps. Needs to run properly. Cerebro is so trusted, in fact, that it’s even been installed on the X-Plane as well as Xavier’s wheelchair. 7 Shi’ar Upgrade Throughout its many years of service to Charles and the rest of the X-Men, Cerebro has been beaten down and destroyed time and time again. So, it makes sense that after years and years of abuse, Charles would want to upgrade the system that had worked so hard for him over the years. With the help of Forge and some Shi’ar tech, Charles was able to give the hardest working extra-sensory psionic device in the world some much needed loving. It was around this time that Jean’s abilities had advanced enough for her to begin using Cerebro as well. 6 Sentience / The Founder Though Cerebro has been destroyed and used against Charles time and time again, there is perhaps no time more iconic than when Bastion tried to take control of the supercomputer and accidentally gave it sentience. As many of Charles’ enemies do, Bastion had come up with the idea of stealing Cerebro and using it against Xavier. However, that was easier said than done because Cerebro self-activated and released a virus that deleted all of its files. The combination of this virus and the nanites that Bastion was using to hack into Cerebro some melded together and gave Cerebro sentience. This sentient version of Cerebro would go on to call itself The Founder and create nanotech versions of the X-Men to be the team his version of Professor X needed. 5 Cerebra Many fans may not realize this, but Professor X has actually had two separate models of AI helpers. The first, Cerebro, being the more iconic of the pair. Cerebro is the one that simply looks like a funny helmet and is kept in the basement of Xavier Mansion. Cerebra, however, is the upgraded version that Xavier and Beast created after Cerebro gained sentience and caused a bunch of trouble for the X-Men. Cerebra, in comparison, is often shown as having a helmet that covers the entire face with an X logo. Cerebra is also housed in an egg-shaped chamber where images of what the user sees are displayed on the walls around them. 4 The Graymalkin Industries Rebuild As previously mentioned, Cerebro and Cerebra have both been built and rebuilt time and time again. Perhaps one of the most iconic versions of their rebuilds is the Graymalkin Industries rebuild. This version of Cerebro is likely the most iconic because not only is it the most visually pleasing, it’s also the version that filmmakers have chosen to highlight in just about every live-action X-Men movie.

A spherical room with a single levitating pathway leading to the center of it where the helmet and controls await the user. 3 A Crucial Flaw At this point in the article, it’s fairly evident that Cerebro (and Cerebra) have helped out Xavier and the X-Men time and time again. Whether they needed help locating or tracking a new mutant or just figuring out what their enemies were up to, Cerebro (and Cerebra) have been there through thick and thin. However, according to David Haller, Cerebro is only calibrated to find mutants with “flashy” powers. This definitely makes sense considering the fact that Cerebro was initially calibrating using the help of an omega-level telepath. This may help to explain why so many mutants have slipped through the cracks throughout Cerebro’s history. 2 Cerebro's Real Primary Function With Jonathan Hickman’s recent run on the X-Men, fans were introduced to a whole plethora of new concepts and a brand new status quo for the iconic team. While one could write an entire article on the new things that Hickman’s run introduced, what’s important here is to note that Cerebro was revealed to have a completely different primary function than originally thought. While Cerebro is still great at locating and analyzing mutants across the world, it was revealed that Cerebro’s primary function was actually to make digital copies of the entirety of mutant consciousness. A digital copy of every living mutant’s brain which could then be implanted in a new body should any mutant meet their deaths. It's going to need an awful lot of storage, that’s for sure. 1 Cerebro's House Of X Upgrade For his run on the X-Men, Hickman wasted no time not only upgrading the X-Men and Mutantkind as a whole, but even Cerebro got an upgrade. This new version of Cerebro is sleeker, sexier and vastly more portable. Gone are the days of heading to the basement of X Mansion or Graymalkin Industries, now wherever Professor X goes, Cerebro can go to. Not To mention the fact that it's been upgraded with Shi’ar tech which allows for the supercomputer to store an infinite number of mutant mind backups. Not too shabby for the old mutant locator. However, those with lesser minds experience a psychic shock after using it.Of course, Jean Grey (voiced by Jennifer Hale) is one of the select few who can use Cerebro without the painful shock. This is because Jean Grey is an evolved mutant and has powerful abilities in telekinesis and telepathy. Not to mention, her powers have ben further enhanced by the Phoenix Force's cosmic energies. It's also worth noting that Jean Grey was the first official student of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. She was also the first mutant that Professor X tested Cerebro on.Xavier also had Jean Grey in the room when he calibrated Cerebro. By doing so, the machine was able to accustom itself to powerful mutants like Jean Grey.RELATED: Is X-Men '97 Part of the MCU? Showrunner Sets the Record StraightWhat Did Jean Grey See in Cerebro? Into a sword by Magneto and presented to Professor Xavier as a gift. In X-Force, it was revealed that “Cerebro was broken, but forged anew and refined, like Xavier's Dream.” In the early days of the new mutant nation, Mikhail Rasputin, the villainous older brother of the X-Men Colossus and Magik, stole the Cerebro Sword. Mikhail himself noted that the Cerebro Sword holds “all the intelligence of Xavier, of Krakoa as a whole.” Fortunately, the sword remained online during the abduction, and the mutants were still able to retrieve the data that was stored within Cerebro. However, Mikhail was still able to weaponize the information stored in the sword, and used it to transport Omega Red through time in an effort to destroy Xavier's timeline. Fortunately, Xavier, Jean Grey, and Wolverine were able to work in conjunction to foil the plot, with the feral mutant retrieving the weapon after a deadly confrontation with Omega Red. The Cerebro Sword possesses all the information that the device contained prior to its destruction. It possesses a full accurate imprint of the timeline, enough that Sage can predict attacks on the past with it. Simultaneously, as Mikhail has shown, it possesses strong telepathic ability in a way that mimics Xavier’s, allowing Omega Red to mentally skip through time without the assistance of a telepath. The sword also possesses a complete backup of every mutant’s mind, although the information is encrypted to keep it from falling into the wrong hands. Echoing motifs of the famous sword Excalibur, the Cerebro Sword represents the path of Xavier’s dream: broken and reforged, stronger and more versatile than ever. In that light, the powerful weapon has become an image of the nation of Krakoa itself, literally containing the livelihood of the mutant society.
